Lip Injections: Pittsburgh Expert Dental & Aesthetics of Pittsburgh Tells You What You Can Expect After Receiving Them

Expect some tenderness and bruising, among other things

Immediately after you receive lip injections, you can expect some swelling and bruising. This is completely normal, and it can last for up to five days. Because of this, you should avoid judging the full effect of your lip injections until the swelling subsides. For most people, it will take four weeks for you to see the “final result” of your injections. These results will last for about six months.

However, significant pain or bruising outside of the lip area is not normal. Discoloration or redness around the injection site is also abnormal. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should contact your lip injector immediately.

8 Aftercare Tips to Keep You Comfortable While Your Lips Heal

Lip injections Pittsburgh expert tells you the dos and don’ts for taking care of your lips

1. Avoid consuming alcohol for the next 24 hours

As a blood thinner, alcohol can worsen your lip swelling and even cause bruising. Alcohol can also dehydrate you, which will slow down your body’s healing time. Because of this, you need to avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours after receiving lip injections. Pittsburgh expert Dental & Aesthetics of Pittsburgh also recommends that you avoid alcohol for a few days before your appointment as well.

2. Ice your mouth the rest of the night

After you receive lip injections, you will likely experience swelling and itchiness. To alleviate this discomfort, you should apply an ice pack to your lips. You can ice your lips on and off throughout the hours following your appointment.

3. Try not to fly

While you probably don’t have any long-distance trips planned for the near future, you should avoid flying in an airplane for at least a week after your appointment. Because of the air pressure in the plane, flying can cause your swelling and bruising to worsen.

4. Avoid strenuous exercise

You will need to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after you receive your lip injections. Pittsburgh dentists, including Dental & Aesthetics of Pittsburgh, recommend this because the elevated heart rate that comes from strenuous exercise will worsen any swelling or bruising.

5. Hydrate yourself with plenty of water

Staying hydrated will help your body heal quicker and achieve the result that you envisioned. Remember to keep a bottle of water around and to also eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Water-rich foods that are great for keeping you hydrated include watermelon, peaches, cucumbers, and oranges.

You should also avoid alcohol and foods that contain high amounts of sodium, as they can dehydrate you and worsen swelling.

6. Stay away from high temperatures

You will have to avoid areas of high temperatures, like the sauna or the heated room where you take your favorite spin class. These high temperatures can end up making any swelling you are experiencing more pronounced.

7. Double-check with your doctor on what painkillers you can use

Only certain medications are safe to take after receiving lip injections. If you need to take any medications to relieve your pain, you will need to avoid blood-thinning medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin. However, you can typically take acetaminophen products like Tylenol to reduce discomfort. Some people also take Arnica to reduce bruising.

8. Stay away from the cigarettes

Smoking after your lip injections can increase your risk of developing an infection. Not only that, but they can also dry out your skin and cause premature aging. Whether or not you are a smoker, you should also stay away from any people smoking nearby during the days following your procedure.
